This book was conceived almost twenty years ago. Its aim was to gather together the scientific evidence concerning the prevention of dental disease. Subsequent editions built on this aim and expanded the scope of the book. Now the primary importance of prevention in all aspects of disease is generally accepted and it is time for the book to take a different direction. I am delighted that two col- leagues, June Nunn and Jimmy Steele, have agreed to join me in developing this fourth edition. They have been instrumental in developing the shape of the book
